NOTICE: General Company Auditions (2026-27 Season)

9th Hour is seeking performing artists (children and adults) to be part of the ensemble cast of productions in next season's line-up: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (December 2026) and an original theatrical piece Frankenstein Ai (May 2027), both part of The Gladstone's 2026-27 season of professional theatre.


NOTE: Before applying, please read the full audition notice and confirm your availability for the production schedules as outlined. Absences for any technical and dress rehearsals or performances are not acceptable.



Those auditioning should enjoy or be open to working collaboratively in a style of physical ensemble theatre and engaging body, mind, and emotion with a story's themes and ideas. 9th Hour welcomes a wide spectrum of performing artists with different levels of experience and including all ethnic and religious backgrounds, abilities, and genders. Please indicate any experience or special skills in playing an instrument, singing, movement, dance, puppetry, juggling, acrobatics, or physical ensemble theatre.


GENERAL INFORMATION

 

Auditions are by appointment only and will be held at 5:45pm and 8:00pm on Wednesday May 27th and Wednesday June 3rd in a central Ottawa location. Auditions are conducted in a group format, each lasting 2 hours. Artists should come prepared to participate as a group in physical, ensemble, movement, and vocal exercises, as well as scene exploration. No monologue preparation is required.


To book an audition, please email info@9th-hour.ca with your performance C.V. or relevant theatre or performance experience, as well as a recent head shot. You may also include a note or letter indicating why you wish to audition for the company, although not required.


NOTE: While all applications will be reviewed and considered, only those selected to audition will be contacted. Thank you in advance for your interest in joining the company.


COMPENSATION

 

Both adult and child artists will be engaged under a contractual agreement with the Company and paid a base fee for involvement in the production, upon completion of performances. Artists who are members of the Canadian Actors' Equity Association (CAEA) or any other association that has a reciprocal agreement with the CAEA, are welcome to audition. Please indicate when applying if this is the case.


NOTE: At this time, artists will be given a conditional offer and Letter of Understanding for Frankenstein Ai until additional production details have been confirmed at a later date.



PRODUCTION SCHEDULE (The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe)


REHEARSALS will be held in a central neighbourhood of Ottawa, on Mondays and Wednesdays (5:45pm-10:00pm) throughout the months of September, October, November, and December.


OTHER IMPORTANT DATES include technical and dress rehearsals as follows: Monday December 14th (6:00-10:00pm), Tuesday December 15th (6:00-10:00pm), Wednesday December 16th (1:00-10:00pm), and Thursday December 17th (1:00-10:00pm).


PERFORMANCES are at 7:00pm on December 18th, 19th, 22nd, 23rd, 26th, 29th, 30th, and January 2nd as well as at 2:00pm on December 19th, 20th, 22nd, 23rd, 26th, 27th, 29th, 30th, 31st, and January 2nd.


NOTE: As outlined above, multiple weekday afternoons in December will be required for rehearsals and performances before and over the holidays. Those auditioning should come with full knowledge of their schedule and the ability to commit to the entire production schedule.


CASTING DETAILS (The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe)

Characters in the story include Aslan, the White Witch and her Dwarf servant, Fenris Ulf (Captain of the Secret Police), Mr. Tumnus, Mr. Beaver and Mrs. Beaver, Mr. Centaur and Unicorn, Father Christmas and his Elf assistant, as well as the four Pevensie children.


There will be several puppeteering opportunities in this production. Please indicate in your application your willingness to learn to be a puppeteer.


The Pevensie children will be cast in two sets of artists, splitting the number of performances.

Preferable "stage ages" for the children performers are Peter (15-18yo), Susan (13-16yo), Edmund (11-14yo), and Lucy (9-12yo).

PRODUCTION SCHEDULE (Frankenstein Ai)


REHEARSALS will be held in a central neighbourhood of Ottawa, 2-3 weekday evenings a week, primarily throughout the months of February, March, April, and May.


OTHER IMPORTANT DATES include technical and dress rehearsals as follows: Monday May 17th (6:00-10:00pm), Tuesday May 18th (1:00-10:00pm), and Wednesday May 19th (1:00-10:00pm).


PERFORMANCES are at 7:30pm on May 20th, 21st, 22nd, 25th, 26th, 27th, 28th, and 29th as well as at 2:30pm on May 22nd, May 23rd, and May 29th as well as a possible mid-day school performance on Wednesday, May 26th.


NOTE: As outlined above, several weekday afternoons in May will be required for rehearsals and performances. Those auditioning should come with full knowledge of their schedule and the ability to commit to the entire production schedule.

Characters in the story include AdamAi (AGI humanoid), Victor Frankenstein, Elizabeth (his wife), Ernest Frankenstein (his adult brother), William Frankenstein (his kid brother), Victor's parents, Henry (his best friend), Justine (his colleague), Mr. DeLacey and his family (Agatha, Sophie, Felix), as well as various other journalists, scientists, soldiers, etc.
