We invite anyone curious about 9th Hour's style of theatre to join us for a workshop on April 22nd. It offers an opportunity for newcomers and seasoned theatre artists alike to learn what we do or sharpen their skills and techniques further by engaging with us in physical ensemble theatre (definition below). Led by our experienced team of directors and facilitators, participants will work alongside the company's performing artists and get a taste of what it's like to be part of an ensemble theatre production. A "pay-what-you-can" fee will apply. More details below.

9th Hour defines physical ensemble theatre as working together to tell a story in which all performers take on multiple roles and are all equally essential in telling the story. The emphasis is on high touch, high impact, expressive sound and movement, often involving close contact.

Workshop Details

Participants should dress comfortably with clothing and footwear suitable for movement. The workshop begins at 6pm sharp and ends at 10pm sharp with a 15 minute break at 8pm. Any person 16 years or older can participate. No experience in theatre is necessary, although certainly appreciated. The space is fully accessible by wheelchair.

The first half of the workshop consists of large group theatre exercises that develop focus, cooperation, and stylized movement, as well as exercises that are physical in nature, using both voice and body for the purposes of dramatic expression. The second half of the workshop consists of work in smaller groups, developing a physically engaging scene from text which tells a story while receiving guidance and direction, and presenting to the rest of the larger group.

Thank God For Regret

I find that many of the characters within Babette’s Feast have to grapple with regret, and have to make decisions that one way or the other, they would regret.
