Theatre Development Workshops

Writer: 9th Hour Theatre Company9th Hour Theatre Company

We invite anyone curious about 9th Hour's creative process to join us for one or more in a series of theatre workshops in the spring of 2025. Keep reading to find out more.

These workshops, part of a larger series of developing an original work of theatre, Frankenstein AI, are open for drop-ins, offering a chance for newcomers and seasoned theatre artists to learn what we do or sharpen their skills by engaging in a physical ensemble theatre (definition below) workshop with us. Led by our experienced team of directors and facilitators, participants in these workshops will work alongside 9th Hour performing artists and get a taste of the development process first-hand as well as experience what it's like to be part of a 9th Hour production. A $20 fee applies per participant per workshop. More details below.

9th Hour defines physical ensemble theatre as working together to tell a story in which all performers take on multiple roles and are all equally essential in telling the story. The emphasis is on high touch, high impact, expressive sound and movement, often involving close contact.

About 9th Hour

The company's purpose is to explore, examine, and express the big ideas and questions relating to faith, spirituality, and the human experience. This is accomplished primarily through physical ensemble theatre with a special emphasis on the creation, development, and production of original artistic works. The company spent 2021-24 developing an original work that became the musical audio drama Beauty Will Save the World.

Workshop Details

Participants should dress comfortably with clothing and footwear suitable for movement. The workshop begins at 6pm sharp and ends at 10pm sharp with a 15 minute break at 8pm. No experience in theatre is necessary and all are welcome to participate.

The first half of the workshop consists of large group theatre exercises that develop focus, cooperation, and stylized movement, as well as exercises that are physical in nature, using both voice and body for the purposes of dramatic expression. The second half of the workshop consists of work in smaller groups, developing a physically engaging scene from text while receiving guidance and direction, and presenting to the rest of the larger group.
